30 September 2011
It was the wettest October day in Far North Queensland in more than 50 years – yet the local community of Hopevale didn’t let the rain dampen their spirits as they came together to celebrate good health at the Hopevale Sporting Oval in September.
The school kids enjoyed a performance from the local Voices in Harmony choir before people took to the stage to share their personal health stories. Clarrie Bowen told his story about a recent experience in the hospital’s intensive care unit after having two lungs collapsed from a lifetime of smoking. From each story the message was clear – to be healthy you need to be active, eat well, don’t smoke and regularly visit your doctor.
Mayor Greg McLean, took to the stage to speak about the effects of chronic disease in the community, announcing the Council commitment to allocate $5,000 for local chronic disease awareness activities.
Apunipima Cape York Health Council’s diet and nutrition team demonstrated how to cook healthy meals, serving up wholemeal damper and chicken vegetable curry for lunch.
After lunch there were opportunities to chat to the local Hopevale Health Clinic team about the local health services available and sign up for a free health check.
It was a day of true community spirit, coming together to eat good tucker and learn about ways to Live Longer!
