Grey skies could not keep Caboolture locals from celebrating the opening of the new Morayfield Health Service at Centenary Lakes on Saturday, 27 August 2011.

With health checks the key focus, a mobile health clinic generously supplied by the Kalwun Health Service was set up and manned by Moreton Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Community Health Service staff. Health checks conducted included blood pressure readings, visual ear health checks and blood glucose levels to prevent chronic diseases such as diabetes and heart disease. These health checks resulted in locals being referred to local healthcare services for further tests, and brief smoking interventions, where community members received smoking cessation information and support.

A major drawcard for the day was NRL Broncos player, Sam Thaiday. Sam took questions from a captivated audience about what he does to keep fit and healthy. He spoke about how getting regular exercise through training allows him to perform well as a top level sportsman.

Local artist, Karla McGrady shared her creative talents with kids as they painted boomerangs, whilst others enjoyed the Zumba dance-offs, face painting, and browsing the assorted stalls displaying health information and decorative wares such as unique pieces of jewellery.

With everyone working up a good appetite from joining in the day’s activities, a delicious and healthy lunch provided by the Bowies from Kup-Muri Delights was thoroughly enjoyed by all.

The Institute for Urban Indigenous Health believes that hosting events like this will raise their community’s awareness of the risk factors linked with chronic disease. Importantly, it encourages locals to have regular health checks, seek support from local health services, and have fun while keeping active – all great ways to help you Live Longer!
