The Garma Festival Youth Forum celebrated their youth and culture by giving young people a space to share stories, music and new ideas, whilst having fun getting active.
Primed for the day’s activities after a warm-up session in the “Seize the Day” workshop first thing in the morning everyone was warmly welcomed with a traditional dance and smoking ceremony.
The popular circus workshops, run by graduates of youth circuses from across Australia, showed everyone entertaining ways to get moving through learning circus skills such as tumbling, flipping and juggling.
The songwriting workshops lead by Aboriginal singer/songwriter, Emma Donovan, were also a big hit, with teens sharing their musical skills in groups to write, perform and record songs. The budding musos will receive a CD of their work, giving them their very own record of their Garma experience.
The Yothu Yindi Foundation hosted the Forum to inspire young people to explore ways to express their local community’s culture. The local youth came away from the day feeling positive and invigorated, having learnt new and fun ways to keep fit and healthy to Live Longer!
