In the spirit of NAIDOC Week, Wagga Wagga danced, dashed and dined to tunes played by local Indigenous talent, supported by the Live Longer! Campaign.
Local Elder Aunty Isabel Reid opened the celebration by welcoming everyone to the Wiradjuri country. With “Change: the next step is ours” and “Live Longer!” the messages of the day, health workers were on hand to give helpful advice on making healthier lifestyle choices. Everyone enjoyed the many fun activities on offer such as live music, traditional dancing, a jumping castle and face painting.
The main event, the first ever “Black Flash 100m Dash”, gave Indigenous locals from near and far a chance to get active by showing off their speed and physical fitness. The community was also treated to a healthy feed of bush tucker. On the menu was kangaroo, emu and wombat, which gave locals new ideas for cooking traditional tasty and nutritious meals.
The Active Team from the Wagga Wagga City Council were pleased with their festival’s success and said that they hoped to encourage the local community to make changes in their lives now to avoid developing a chronic disease later.
