The Institute for Urban Indigenous Health brought its Deadly Choices roadshow to Palm Beach on the Gold Coast to host their third South East Queensland Healthy Community Day on Sunday 3 July.
Held in partnership with the local Kalwun Health Service, the day was a hype of activity in celebration of the start of NAIDOC week – and all in the name of encouraging attendees to Get Active, Eat Good Tucker and Live Longer!
With over 500 people attending, both children and adults lined up to receive their ‘Deadly Choices’ card, and worked through activities linked to each of the Live Longer! messages. Everyone was encouraged to participate, with those visiting all the stalls and activity stations rewarded with a prize pack on the day.
Kids could get active by scaling a rock climbing wall, jumping on the bouncy castle or participating in some Zumba dancing or sporting drills. A pedometer challenge was also held, with winner Vanessa Nielsen taking home a $50 Rebel Sport voucher for completing over 12,000 steps on the day!
Healthy eating messages were also promoted through the Good Quick Tucker stand where kids prepared a nutritious mixed bean salad. A healthy lunch was also provided to all, consisting of a traditional kup-muri lunch, baked veggies and vegetable and coconut curry.
Kalwun Health Service staff ran mini health checks on the day for children and adults, measuring blood pressure, blood glucose and performing a BMI analysis. Over 150 attendees visited the stand throughout the day and learned why it’s important they see their doctor regularly.
A quit smoking tent was also available for people to have a smokalizer test, and find out information about how they get support to quit the smokes.
Congratulations to the team from The Institute for putting on another extremely successful Healthy Community Day for the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities in South East Queensland!
