On Friday 3 June 2011, the National Centre of Indigenous Excellence (NCIE) hosted a Young Mums and Bubs Day to raise awareness about the importance of nutrition and physical activity for both parents and their children.
The young mothers started the day with a information session led by Sarah, the NCIE Youth Programs Co-coordinator. Sarah explained to the participants why it is important to eat well, drink plenty of water and do physical exercise to improve your own health and set a good example for your children.
Armed with Live Longer! water bottles, the mums moved on to a group fitness session led by NCIE Personal Trainer, PJ, who motivated the participants while their bubs kept the onsite crèche workers busy! PJ showed the mums how to use the fitness machines in the gym, and outlined the importance of getting your heart rate going to improve your overall health and reduce the risk of chronic disease.
Following the fitness session, the mums joined their children for an interactive cooking workshop where they were introduced to some fresh healthy ideas for the kitchen. The workshop, led by Little Spoons, explained the importance of nutrition for young children and helped participants to prepare some simple nutritious meals to share with their little ones. The mums enjoyed learning new cooking skills and ways to add nutritious ingredients into standard meals like adding grated carrot and zucchini to meatballs.
The Mums and Bubs day was a great chance to exercise in a fun and supported space, to pick up some new meal ideas and to meet other mums and have a good old yarn and learn about the lifestyle choices you can make to Live Longer!

Hi Maureen. Great to hear from your organisation in Tasmania and thanks for your comment about the NCIE’s Mums and Bubs program. In the spirit of sharing great ideas, we encourage you to get in touch with the folk at the NCIE should you need to find out more information about their program model. Good luck with your planning for the healthy fun day and in encouraging the families in your region to think about the importance of good nutrition, physical activity and regular health checks. The Live Longer! Team
Hello,
I work with Circular Heads Aboriginal Corporation In Smithton Tasmania on the stronger families mums and bubs program as Child and Family Health Educator and have just found your web site.
We have been thinking towards haveing a healthy fun day for our mums and bubs program and also for our other programs here at CHAC and i am very interested in the way the Redfern Mums and bubs day addressed fitness, health and healthy alternatives.
Congratulations on a successful program amd hopefully we can to provide our Indigenious Families with the same message on fitness, health and nutrition.
Well done.
