On 4-5 May 2011, over 60 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health workers from across Australia gathered in Adelaide to get a first look at the Live Longer! Community Health Action Pack.
People came from all corners of the country including Danila Dilba Health Service in Darwin; Dandenong and District Aborigines Co-operative in Victoria; Bega Garnbirringu Health Service in Kalgoorlie; and Murray Mallee Community Health Service in South Australia.
Many of the attendees were part of the new Tackling Smoking and Healthy Lifestyle Workforce funded by the Australian Government to help reduce smoking and help improve nutrition and physical activity in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities across the country.
The practical two-day workshop gave participants a chance to work together and share their experiences about working in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health, with a particular focus on raising awareness of the lifestyle choices which contribute to chronic disease.
The Live Longer! Community Health Action Pack has been developed to assist Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities to successfully develop and implement locally health promotion activities.
Based on participant evaluation forms the opportunity to network, interact, share ideas and learn from each other was seen as a particularly positive outcome of the workshop.
The Action Pack will be available on the Live Longer! website from the end of July 2011.
Thanks Steve, we’d love to hear more about your project.
